Miller scores 26 as St. Joe tops Calvert Hall, 72-62
2/24/2010
by Joe DiBlasi Tuesday was a big day for the Mount St. Joseph basketball program. Coach Pat Clatchey was named the Baltimore Catholic League Coach of the Year, at the 39th annual BCL luncheon early in the afternoon, and senior Eric Atkins won the league's Most Valuable Player Award for the second straight season. In addition to those prestigious awards, Ryley Beaumont was named to the All-BCL first team, and Matt Miller made the second team. Awards aside, the Gaels had even more fun Tuesday evening as they got back on the court and dissolved some of their disappointment over Sunday's loss to St. Frances in the MIAA A Conference title game by traveling to Calvert Hall and knocking off the Cardinals, 72-62, in a make-up game to help determine the final seedings for this weekend's BCL Tournament. Atkins, Miller and Beaumont combined for 57 points to lead the Mount to its 29th win of the season. The win allowed the Gaels (29-3 overall) to complete their BCL regular season with a perfect 12-0 record, and they had already clinched the top seed in the upcoming championship tournament. The first place finish gives the Gaels a first round bye in the tourney, which will begin on Saturday night at Loyola University. Clatchey has won six regular season titles, and three tournaments, and the win over the Cardinals was the 428th of his brilliant career at the Mount. Calvert Hall (18-6) grabbed a 20-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the hot shooting Miller hit three treys in the second stanza to propel the Gaels to a 40-33 halftime lead. Miller torched the Cardinals for 21 first half markers, and he finished the night with 26 points. Atkins had 17, and Beaumont finished with 16. Calvert Hall had three players in double figures as well. First team BCL stalwarts Damion Lee and Jon Graham finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively, and Kyle Wise, who crammed in 11 second quarter points, was high man for coach John Bauersfeld with 16. It was Senior Night at the Hall, and the last time Graham, Lee, Wise and Donya Jackson, the BCL Defensive Player of the Year, will perform on the home hardwood for the Cardinals. Graham took the floor with 1,648 career points at the Hall, a tremendous accomplishment. Calvert Hall plays at St. Frances on Thursday night, with second place in the BCL still on the line.
